E-Bike Safety Update

The Murrieta Police Department is committed to maintaining strong ties with the community and providing clear information on critical matters. Recently, there has been some confusion surrounding the use of E-bikes by young individuals in Murrieta. Murrieta PD created an informational video that is available on their social media channels in an effort to bring clarity and proactively mitigate any potential legal complications. Here are some of the biggest takeaways.

Addressing Traffic Concerns

There has been an increase in complaints related to electric bicycle traffic. To ensure the safety of all individuals, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of the legal parameters that govern the use of E-bikes on the roads.

Understanding California Vehicle Code

E-Bikes fall under the category of standard bicycles if their maximum power does not exceed 750 watts and they provide assist up to 28 MPH.

E-Bike classifications:

Class 1: Pedal-assisted E-bikes with a maximum speed of 20 MPH.

Class 2: Throttle-assisted E-bikes, also limited to 20 MPH.

Class 3: Pedal-assisted E-bikes with a maximum speed of 28 MPH. (ages 16+)

Clarification on Off-Road E-Bikes

E-Bikes such as the Surron are exclusively meant for off-road use and are not street legal. With the ability to exceed speeds of 50 MPH, they must not be operated on roads, bike lanes, or sidewalks. Illegitimate use poses significant risks to riders, pedestrians, and motorists alike.

Enhanced Focus on Education and Enforcement

In response to the growing trend of unauthorized off-road E-bike usage, efforts have intensified by authorities with educational campaigns aimed at both young riders and parents. Enforcement measures, including the issuance of citations, may have implications for individuals seeking to acquire a driver's license.

Parental Responsibility

Parents should be aware that they can be held liable for permitting their children to operate off-road E-Bikes unlawfully.

Remember, the goal is to educate and ensure the safety of all individuals. If you have inquiries regarding E-bikes, don't hesitate to contact the Murrieta Police Department's Traffic Division at 951-696-3615.
