Super Simple ways to spook up your kid's snacks for Halloween!

Halloween is only a couple weeks away!  We all know that the kids will get a ton of snacks that aren't the healthiest when they go to all of their Halloween Parties, Trunk-or-Treats and more!  Here are some fun Halloween snacks you can make for your kids that are a lot healthier but just as festive!

Supplies needed

  • Dark chocolate
  • White chocolate
  • Bananas
  • Mandarin oranges or clementines
  • Strawberries
  • Pretzel sticks
  • Cheese sticks
  • Kiwi
  • Googly eye candy sprinkles
  • Piping bags with small tips or disposable ziploc bags

Most of these items are super easy to find at any local grocery store.  The eye sprinkles are usually found in the Halloween baking section at Wal-Mart.  I wound up finding mine in the baking aisle at Target.  If you wind up not being able to find them, just use the white and dark chocolate to make the eyes for Frankenstein.

Killer Strawberries

These strawberry monster mouths are super easy to make with just a little melted white and dark chocolate. Just wash and dry the strawberries really well first, then slice off the tops so the strawberries have a flat surface to sit on upside down.

Use melted dark chocolate in a ziploc bag with a very small corner snipped off to pipe a "U" shaped mouth toward the point of each strawberry. Then use melted white chocolate to pipe jagged teeth starting from the outer edge of the mouth and going across the dark chocolate to duplicate the look.

Remember, it's okay for the teeth and mouths to be misshapen since these are monsters after all!  I'm never the greatest at decorating food but this was super quick and easy and still looked great despite my imperfections.

Boo-nanas

These are even easier than the strawberries.  Just peel and slice a ripe banana in half to make two ghosts. Use melted dark chocolate to pipe little eyes and circular "O" shaped mouths.

Alternatively, you could use mini chocolate chips for the eyes and regular chocolate chips for the mouths by actually pressing them into the banana halves.

🗒️. Here's a tip if you aren't serving these right away or you know it takes your kid awhile to actually eat everything (like my child). Use a pastry brush to brush the cut ends of the bananas with a little lemon juice mixed with a little cold water to help prevent them from browning as quickly.

Franken-kiwis

These little guys are so creepy and fun! And they taste delicious too! They were Amaya's favorite treat out of all of them!  It is also the most detailed snack of all of them in this article.

To make the Frankenstein kiwis, first use a pairing knife or vegetable peeler to peel away the fuzzy brown skin from about ⅔ of the bottom of the kiwi, then slice the kiwi in half, creating two "heads" with hairy crowns.

Pat the peeled kiwi flesh dry with a paper towel, then use melted dark chocolate to pipe a line for a mouth and a little scar on his face. Pipe two dots of chocolate to act as glue, then stick googly eye sprinkles on to the face. Complete the look of your Frankenstein by breaking apart a couple of pretzel sticks and jamming them into either side to look like bolts.

Pretzel Broomsticks

These pretzel broomsticks are a fun savory option that goes well with all the fruit and was my daughter's second favorite snack on this plate.  Mozzarella cheese sticks work better for this broomstick design buy my daughter doesn't like mozarella cheese for some reason and the cheddar cheese sticks weren't round so I did my best with the cheese she enjoys most. Just peel open a couple of  cheese sticks and cut them into thirds. Then use clean, sharp scissors or a small knife to snip the bottom half of each piece of cheese to form the broom bristles. Stick a pretzel stick into the top for a handle and you're done!

Orange Pumpkins

These are the easiest of all the snack ideas here. Just grab a bag of "cuties" (also known as clementines) or mandarin oranges from the store and peel them. Then stick pieces of cilantro or parsley stems in them to give the impression of a pumpkin stem. You could also cut up a celery stick into small pieces to use as a stem, if that's what you have on hand instead (which is what I did for mine).

Of course these are fruits so they won't keep for very long so make sure to not prep these too far ahead of time.  They honestly didn't take long to put together (maybe 15 minutes).  The thing that took the longest was melting the chocolate and putting it into ziploc bags.  If you have any leftover fruit, just freeze them for a smoothie later or just eat the leftovers for yourself (something I do all the time.  I just won't eat anything myself until I see what my toddler decided she doesn't want...lol).
