Military officials Thursday publicly identified a U.S. Marine killed in a tactical vehicle rollover crash during a training exercise at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

Sgt. Matthew K. Bylski was the Marine who was killed, according to a news release from I Marine Expeditionary Force. The crash happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday as the amphibious combat vehicle was making a ground movement during training.

Bylski, who was originally from Royal Oak, Michigan, joined the Marine Corps in January 2019. He was trained as an amphibious combat vehicle crewman, assigned to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit's Battalion Landing Team 1/5, officials said. He served as a vehicle commander.

Bylski's awards and decorations include two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Fourteen other Marines were inside the vehicle when it crashed, officials said. They were taken to local hospitals, including Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, for evaluation and treatment. One Marine remained at the hospital in good condition. The others were treated and released.

The incident was under investigation.
