Matzo Ball Soup: Nourishing Tradition and Heritage in Jewish Families

Within the rich tapestry of Jewish cuisine, Matzo Ball Soup stands as more than just a flavorful concoction of broth and delicate dumplings. Ingredients:

- 4 large eggs

- 1 cup matzo meal

- 1/4 cup chicken fat or vegetable oil

- 1/4 cup club soda or seltzer water

- Salt and pepper to taste

- 2 carrots, peeled and sliced

- 2 stalks celery, sliced

- 1 onion, diced

- 2 cloves garlic, minced

- 8 cups chicken broth

- Chopped fresh dill for garnish (optional)


Instructions:

1. In a bowl, beat the eggs. Add matzo meal, chicken fat or oil, club soda, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

2. In a large pot, sauté carrots, celery, onion, and garlic until softened.

3. In another pot, bring chicken broth to a boil.

4. Wet your hands and form the matzo mixture into balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Gently drop them into the boiling broth.

5. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes.

6. Add the sautéed vegetables to the soup and cook for an additional 15-20 minutes.

7. Garnish with fresh dill if desired and serve hot.
