In today's fast-paced world, our students at Great Oak High School in the Temecula Valley School District are navigating the era of artificial intelligence, gaining firsthand insights into its interaction with the human experience. This significant moment in history is echoed in the theme of the upcoming 41st Annual Riverside County Academic Decathlon – "Technology and Humanity."
Scheduled to kick off virtually on January 13, 2024, and culminating in the in-person Super Quiz and awards ceremony on Saturday, January 27, this multi-day event will see students from 11 high schools in Riverside County showcasing their academic prowess. Proudly sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education, the Academic Decathlon is a 10-event contest mirroring its ancient Greek counterpart.
Participants will exhibit their academic strength through seven written tests, essay writing, prepared and impromptu speeches, and interviews. The Super Quiz, a lively team event held before a live audience, features teams composed of nine students representing three grade point categories – Honor (GPA 3.80 - 4.00), Scholastic (GPA 3.20 - 3.799), and Varsity (GPA 0.00 - 3.199).
On the initial competition day, January 13, students will engage in essay writing and objective tests, leading up to the speech and interview portion on January 27. The highlight of the event, the Super Quiz, is open to the public and commences at 1:00 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony at 4 p.m., both hosted at Canyon Springs High School in Moreno Valley, CA.
The awards ceremony will celebrate individual accomplishments and reveal the team representing Riverside County at the California Academic Decathlon on March 22-23, 2024, in Santa Clara. The journey continues for the California state champion, advancing to the United States Academic Decathlon from April 25-27, 2024, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Reflecting on the 2023 Riverside County Academic Decathlon, Western Center Academy from the Hemet Unified School District made history as the champion for the first time. As we gear up for 2024, the 11 Riverside County high school teams vying for victory include Beaumont High School, Corona High School, Hemet High School, Western Center Academy, Elsinore High School, Temescal Canyon High School, Valley View High School, Vista Del Lago High School, Heritage High School, Great Oak High School, and John W. North High School.
Let's anticipate another thrilling chapter in the Riverside County Academic Decathlon history, building on the legacy of past champions and inspiring the bright minds of our future.
