Celebrating Presidents' Day: Honoring America's Leaders

At home activities and books about President’s Day!

As we approach Presidents' Day, it's a great opportunity to teach our kids about the history of our nation and the leaders who have shaped it. This holiday, celebrated on the third Monday in February, honors the birthdays of two of our most influential presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Here are some fun activities and books to help your family celebrate and learn more about Presidents' Day.


Activities for Kids

1. Create a Presidents' Day Craft: Get creative with your kids by making patriotic crafts such as paper plate American flags, handprint eagles, or even a cardboard White House replica.





2. Presidents' Day Trivia: Test your family's knowledge of presidential trivia with a fun quiz. You can include questions about presidents, historical events, and the White House.  Check out this website for some great questions with answers:

3. Write a Letter to the President:  Encourage your kids to write a letter to the current president or to a historical president expressing their thoughts, questions, or admiration.

4.  Presidential Role Play: Have a family role-playing session where each family member takes on the persona of a different president. You can act out famous speeches, debates, or even create your own presidential cabinet.


Books About Presidents' Day for Kids

1. “Presidents' Day" by Anne Rockwell:  This colorful picture book introduces young readers to the holiday and its significance, exploring the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

2. “So You Want to Be President? by Judith St. George:  Winner of the Caldecott Medal, this humorous and informative book takes readers on a journey through the lives of various U.S. presidents, offering fun facts and anecdotes along the way.

3. "I Am George Washington" by Brad Meltzer:  Part of the "Ordinary People Change the World" series, this engaging biography introduces children to the life and achievements of George Washington in a relatable and inspiring way.

4. "Abe Lincoln: The Boy Who Loved Books" by Kay Winters: This picture book tells the story of Abraham Lincoln's childhood love for reading and how it shaped his path to becoming one of America's greatest presidents.




5. “Duck for President" by Doreen Cronin: A hilarious tale about a duck who decides to run for president, this book offers a lighthearted introduction to the electoral process and the responsibilities of leadership.

This Presidents' Day, take the opportunity to engage your kids in learning about the history and importance of our nation's leaders. Whether through fun activities or educational books, there are plenty of ways to make this holiday meaningful for the whole family.
