March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Understanding and Celebrating National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

By Ashley Cunningham, Publisher - Macaroni Kid Temecula-Murrieta-French Valley March 6, 2024

This month is dedicated to raising awareness about developmental disabilities, understanding their impact on individuals and families, and promoting inclusion within the community.

What Are Developmental Disabilities?

Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions begin during the developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person's lifetime. Common developmental disabilities include autism spectrum disorders, dyslexia, and ADHD, among others. Recognizing the signs early can lead to better support and resources for children and their families.

Why This Month Matters

National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is important because it shines a light on the needs and potential of individuals with developmental disabilities. It's a time to celebrate achievements, while also acknowledging the challenges faced by individuals and their families. By raising awareness, we aim to foster understanding and encourage supportive communities where everyone can thrive.

Local and National Resources

For families in the Temecula, Murrieta, French Valley, Menifee, and Lake Elsinore areas, there are several resources available to support children with developmental disabilities. Local organizations offer various services from educational support to recreational activities designed to be inclusive and supportive.

- Eagle Soar Playground provides special play times for kids with disabilities, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all children to play and learn together.

  • Hours of Operation: Splash Pad is closed until Spring 2024. Playground is open from dawn to dusk.
    Inclusive & Accessible
  • The Eagle Soar Playground and Splash Pad at Michael "Mike" Naggar Community Park is intended to provide a safe, integrative, and welcoming playground where children of all abilities can come and play together where they can feel a sense of belonging and acceptance.
  • The Eagle Soar Playground and Splash Pad has many features that are inclusive for children of all abilities. If you'd like to see ways to play and how to use the equipment, please see the guide created by Girl Scout Troop 1727 by clicking HERE.
  • Inclusive Social Skills Program: Throughout the year the City of Temecula Community Services Department offers an Inclusive Social Skills Program at the Eagle Soar Playground & Splash Pad (ESP). While this program is in session the splash pad is intended for use by families and children with disabilities only. The ESP Program is a sensory-friendly program held at the Michael “Mike” Naggar Park and Splash Pad. It allows children and families with disabilities to have a stress-free environment and gives them the time to play with each other, explore and participate in enrichment activities.

On a national level, organizations like The Arc and Autism Speaks offer extensive resources, support networks, and advocacy for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

Book Recommendations

Books can be a wonderful resource for understanding developmental disabilities, both for parents and children:

- For Parents: "The Out-of-Sync Child" by Carol Stock Kranowitz offers insights into sensory processing disorder.

- For Children: "My Brother Charlie" by Holly Robinson Peete and Ryan Elizabeth Peete provides a heartwarming look at autism from a sibling's perspective.

Beating the Stigma

Educating our children on how to treat peers with developmental disabilities with respect and kindness is crucial. Discussing topics like diversity, empathy, and inclusion at an early age can pave the way for a more understanding and supportive community.

What You Can Do

- Teach empathy and understanding through books and stories.

- Encourage inclusive playdates and activities.

- Participate in local events supporting developmental disability awareness.

National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month reminds us of the value of inclusivity and support within our communities. By educating ourselves and our children, we can help create a world that appreciates and celebrates the differences among us, offering every child the opportunity to reach their full potential.
