A Mom’s Insight: Taking a Stand Against Street Racing in Temecula

By Ashley Cunningham, Publisher - Macaroni Kid Temecula-Murrieta-French Valley May 30, 2024

Hello fellow parents,

This past Sunday, our city took a significant stand against street racing and reckless driving, and I feel it's important we talk about it from a parent's perspective. As we strive to keep our streets safe for everyone, especially our children, the efforts by our local law enforcement are something I deeply appreciate, and you probably do too.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol and the Temecula Police Department teamed up for an intense eight-hour operation focusing on the stretches of Interstate 15 and various surface streets around Temecula. Their goal? To put a stop to the dangerous street racing and sideshows that have been a growing concern in our community.

During their operation, they handed out 46 traffic citations, arrested two individuals, and gave 14 verbal warnings. They also referred nine vehicles to the California Bureau of Automotive Repair for illegal modifications. It’s a clear message that such reckless behavior won't be tolerated in our town.

As moms, we teach our kids right from wrong, and that includes how they should behave on the road. The fact that street racing and even just watching these illegal activities are punishable offenses is something we should discuss with our teenagers. It’s not just about obeying the law; it’s about ensuring everyone’s safety.

Officer Mike Lassig from the CHP reminded the public that anyone interested in vehicle modifications should double-check the California Vehicle Code to stay within legal bounds. This is a great point to discuss with young driving enthusiasts at home, emphasizing the importance of responsibility on the road.

Let’s use this crackdown as a starting point for conversations with our kids about the serious risks of street racing. We all want our children to come home safe every day. By talking to them about the dangers and legal consequences of such actions, we reinforce the values of safety and responsibility.

Stay safe and hug your little ones a bit tighter tonight. If you have concerns or see dangerous behavior on the roads, don't hesitate to report it. Together, we can keep our streets safe for our families.

With love,

Ashley Cunningham
