Free and Cheap Things to Do with Kids in Southern California

No need to break the bank to fill your summer with fun!

Southern California is a paradise for families, offering a plethora of activities that cater to kids of all ages. Whether you’re a local or visiting, here are some fantastic free and budget-friendly things to do with kids in this sun-soaked region.

1. Beach Days

Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica, CA

The iconic Santa Monica Pier is a must-visit. Enjoy the beach, explore the pier, and take in the vibrant atmosphere. While the rides and games cost money, walking around and enjoying the sights is free. Don’t miss the historic carousel!


Crystal Cove State Park

Laguna Beach, CA

For a more relaxed beach experience, head to Crystal Cove State Park. With tide pools to explore and hiking trails, it’s perfect for a day of outdoor fun. Parking is $15, but the views and activities are worth it.


Bonita Cove

San Diego, CA

This beach in Mission Bay in San Diego is near Belmont Park.  It is shallow and calm so little ones can play without worrying about waves.  There is also an amazing playground nearby that the kids will love.  


2. Parks and Gardens

Griffith Park

Los Angeles, CA

Griffith Park is a treasure trove of activities. Visit the Griffith Observatory for free, hike the trails, or let the kids run around the playgrounds. The Travel Town Museum, with its collection of old trains, is also free and great for kids.


Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens

San Marino, CA

While general admission can be pricey, the Huntington offers free admission on the first Thursday of every month with advance tickets. Explore the beautiful gardens, impressive art collections, and the children’s garden.


Rose Haven Heritage Garden

Temecula, CA

Come visit this free garden in Temecula and take in the beautiful flowers and walking paths.


3. Museums and Educational Centers

California Science Center

Los Angeles, CA

This museum offers free general admission and is packed with interactive exhibits that will captivate kids. Don’t miss the Space Shuttle Endeavour exhibit (additional fee applies).


Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

Los Angeles, CA

Admission is free on the first Tuesday of every month except July and August. Kids will love the dinosaur exhibits, nature gardens, and interactive displays.


La Brea Tar Pits and Museum

Los Angeles, CA

Kids can see prehistoric fossils being excavated and learn about the ancient creatures that once roamed Los Angeles. Admission is free on the first Tuesday of every month except July and August.


Temecula Valley Museum

Temecula, CA

Come out and learn about Temecula's history and let the kids play in the interactive exhibits upstairs.  It is free to enter but they suggest you leave them a donation upon entry.


4. Animal Encounters


Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden

Arcadia, CA

On the third Tuesday of each month, admission is free. The kids will enjoy spotting peacocks and exploring the gardens.


5. Historical and Cultural Sites

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park

San Diego, CA

Step back in time and explore the rich history of California. This park offers free admission and numerous free exhibits and living history demonstrations.


Mission San Juan Capistrano

San Juan Capistrano, CA

Kids under 4 are free, and admission for kids aged 4-11 is just $9. Explore the beautiful grounds and learn about California’s mission history.


6. Outdoor Adventures

Runyon Canyon

Los Angeles, CA

For families who love hiking, Runyon Canyon offers scenic trails with panoramic views of Los Angeles. It’s a popular spot for locals and visitors alike, and it’s free!


Balboa Park

San Diego, CA

Balboa Park is a sprawling cultural park with free gardens, playgrounds, and trails. While some museums charge admission, many offer free entry on specific days of the month.


Santa Rosa Plateau

Murrieta, CA

There are lots of trails to explore in this area.  No Dogs are allowed on the trails.  There is a fee: $4 per adult and $3 per child.
