Another Odor Advisory was issued Thursday, Aug. 1, by the South Coast Air Quality Management District for parts of Riverside County and areas near the Imperial County line.
Residents are cautioned that low-speed winds from the southeast are expected to bring hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from the Salton Sea. H2S is a gas with a distinctive "rotten eggs" smell. It is a product of organic decay.
H2S levels will peak around the North Salton Sea shore and north of the Salton Sea, including cities such as Mecca and Indio, according to the SCAQMD.
The Odor Advisory is in effect through Tuesday, Aug. 6.
The same advisory was issued for 6 a.m. Monday, July 29, through 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, due to increased H2S levels from the Salton Sea.
While the advisory was not in effect for western Riverside County, historically H2S from the Salton Sea has wafted as far west as the nearby San Gorgonio Pass Area and communities in Southwest Riverside County. September 2012 was a particularly smelly month.
For years, California state agencies have advanced projects at the Salton Sea to improve air quality and provide critical environmental habitat for birds along the Pacific Flyway.
