Addressing School Safety

A Parentโ€™s Perspective on Recent Threats in Riverside County

As a mom, there’s nothing more important to me than the safety and well-being of my children, especially when they’re at school. That’s why the recent news about criminal threats made against schools in our area hits close to home. It’s a reminder that we must remain vigilant and work together as a community to keep our kids safe.

Just this past week, two separate incidents involving young teens making threats against middle schools in Riverside County have come to light. First, a 13-year-old in Murrieta was arrested after allegedly making online threats toward Warm Springs Middle School. Just a day later, another 13-year-old boy was suspected of making criminal threats against Mountain View Middle School in Moreno Valley. Thankfully, in both cases, no one was harmed, and law enforcement acted swiftly to address the threats.

In the Moreno Valley case, concerned students and parents reported a social media post threatening gun violence at the school. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department quickly responded, identifying the suspect as a teenage boy who was taken into custody and booked at the Riverside Juvenile Hall. Investigators found that the image of the weapons used in the threat was taken from the internet, and they believe this to be an isolated incident. Still, extra deputies were on campus the following Monday to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The Murrieta Police Department dealt with a similar situation at Warm Springs Middle School. A former student allegedly made online threats toward the school, tagging its Instagram account. Thanks to the quick work of School Resource Officers, the suspect was identified and taken into custody. A search of the teen’s home led to the seizure of four firearms. The Murrieta Police Department has since increased its presence at local schools to provide additional security and peace of mind for students, parents, and staff.

As parents, these incidents are alarming, but they also highlight the importance of communication and community involvement. In both cases, the quick action of students, parents, and law enforcement helped prevent potential tragedies. It’s a powerful reminder that if we see or hear something concerning, we must speak up—our voices can make a difference.

The safety of our children is a shared responsibility. By staying informed, communicating openly with our kids, and fostering a strong relationship with our local schools and law enforcement, we can help create a safer environment for everyone.

If you have any information regarding these incidents, please reach out to the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station at 951-486-6700 or the Murrieta Police Department. Let’s continue to work together to ensure our schools remain safe places where our children can learn, grow, and thrive.
